Kutsinhira at Neighborhood Picnic

Our new home makes us part of the Southeast Eugene neighborhood. The annual neighborhood picnic is happening this Saturday, September 9 from 3pm - 7pm. This year Kutsinhira will have a small presence there. We’ll be tabling with a couple of marimbas and mbira to demonstrate. It promises to be a family friendly event with music, ice cream social, bhangra workshop, food carts, and a beer garden! Come meet some of Kutsinhira’s neighbors and SE Eugene’s neighborhood leaders.

Camp paGungwa

Kutsinhira Cultural Arts Center is pleased to announce the 14th annual Camp paGungwa ("by the ocean"), a four-day mbira intensive on the Oregon Coast. This year our honored guest and teacher will be Patience Munjeri. Camp will be held at our traditional ocean-side retreat in Florence, Oregon, on Labor Day weekend (Friday evening 9/1/2017 through early afternoon Monday, 9/4/2017).

With the Zimbabwean Music Festival taking a year off in 2017, Camp paGungwa provides an especially valuable opportunity to immerse yourself in the music and traditions of Zimbabwe.

Mbira will be taught and played from beginner through advanced levels, plus hosho, drumming, singing and dance. A complete workshop schedule is available upon request.

Camp paGungwa is held at a beachfront home north of Florence, Oregon, USA. Check-in is 7PM Friday Sept. 1; departure is 1PM on Monday Sept. 4. In addition to a full schedule of learning and playing Zimbabwean music, there will be communal living, three delicious meals per day, cultural presentations and enjoyment of the beach, dunes & forest just steps outside the door.

De Solution Band and Jenaguru Full Moon Marimba

  • Date: Friday, June 23, 2017
  • Time: 7:00 pm – 10:30 pm
  • Location: Whirled Pies Downtown, 8th and Charnelton, Eugene, OR

In Zimbabwe, everyone dances to the spirited rhythms of traditional music! Jenaguru, a 10-member marimba band, draws on the influence of traditional Zimbabwean mbira music to create jubilant dance music on marimbas. From the playful song Kamba to the hauntingly beautiful Todzungaira, the complex melodies and rhythms of the marimbas, vocals, and the strong pulse of the hosho and drums stir and inspire the audience.

Jenaguru, a performing ensemble of Kutsinhira, has performed throughout Oregon, including Eugene's First Night, the Eugene Celebration, Saturday Market, the Bach Festival, the Zimbabwean Music Festival, public schools, and for many community events and private celebrations.

De Solution Band plays world music influenced by their Zimbabwean roots and their love of African, reggae and soulful dance sounds. Mbiras, percussion, voices, and guitars blend together to make this music irresistible. De Solution sings in Shona and English and has performed in clubs, festivals, and private parties around Oregon.

This exciting evening of world music is sponsored by Kutsinhira Cultural Arts Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to studying and sharing the music of Zimbabwe. Kutsinhira was founded in 1990 to continue the work of Dr. Dumisani Maraire, a Shona master musician. Kutsinhira Cultural Arts Center is located on the Village School campus in South Eugene and offers Zimbabwean music classes to all ages and levels of experience. In addition to classes and performances, Kutsinhira sponsors musical residencies in Eugene for Zimbabwean master musicians, and financially supports development work directly in Zimbabwe.
